Once seen as a personal and private matter in family life, unpaid care giving is the invisible thread
of health and social systems all over the world
Your full presence is felt by your loved one, and that leads to healing, not just for them but also for you.
Your toolkit!
#1. Take care of yourself. You must! Allow 15 minutes each day, just for you. Treat yourself like company. YOU ARE NOT SELFISH! Practice this sacred time for yourself.
#2. Be a blank love-sponge when you listen to your loved one. Silent, attentive listening heals.
#3. Ask open-ended questions to your loved one, that originate in your question, “What is the experience of living with illness or decline like for them?”
Doulas understand that the uncertainty of illness and grief in a family can become a feedback loop fueled by anxiety and depression. We are concerned about you and understand that we do not and cannot replace your caregiver calling. However, we can give you a breather, be a strong presence for you, be present with your loved one, and bridge your consistent loving care.
