Respite for Caregivers

Once seen as a personal and private matter in family life, unpaid care giving is the invisible thread of  health and social systems all over the world. Caregivers should check in with themselves DAILY!

Your caregiver toolkit!

  • Take care of yourself. You must! Allow 15 minutes each day, just for you. Treat yourself like company. YOU ARE NOT SELFISH! Practice this sacred time for yourself.
  • Be a blank love-sponge when you listen to your loved one. Silent, attentive listening works.
  • Ask open-ended questions to your loved one, and try to imagine, “What is the experience of living with illness or decline like for them?”

Doulas understand that the uncertainty of illness and grief in a family can become a feedback loop fueled by anxiety and depression.

While we do not and cannot replace your caregiver role,  we can give you a breather, be a strong backup for you,  and bridge your consistent loving care.

Watch! Practical advice for caregivers.

Illness or elderly decline can cause anxiety, depression, or stress in even the strongest relationships.

Caregiver.org is a good place to start for tips on care giving.
